Eastron's smart metering solution enables remote monitoring in off-grid environments through LoRaWAN technology, helping local families access reliable electricity and solving long-standing maintenance challenges.
The Challenge: A Community Left in the Dark
In the vast lands of La Guajira, Colombia, approximately 250,000 Wayuu indigenous people live scattered across roughly 1.08 million hectares. This semi-desert region, characterized by arid climate and scarce water resources, remains disconnected from both the traditional power grid and cellula or internet networks—a corner of the world seemingly forgotten by modern infrastructure.

For generations, daily life has been shaped by the absence of electricity. Basic lighting, essential appliances, and productive activities remain out of reach. Children's education suffers without adequate light for studying, while water scarcity compounds their struggles—what little water exists must be extracted manually, a time-consuming and labor intensive process that offers little relief.
To address this crisis, the Colombian government launched a public welfare initiative named Aldea Solar, providing free solar home systems to Wayuu households. These systems harness clean, renewable energy to bridge the infrastructure gap and protect the basic living rights of indigenous communities.
The Problem: When Solar Systems Meet Real-World Constraints
The government-provided solar home systems represent the only viable power solution for the region: a solar photovoltaic system (400-800 Wp), a charge controllers, 2,500 Wh battery storage, and a 1,000 W inverters, delivering approximately 90 kWh per month—sufficient to cover essential household needs. With a 10-year design lifespan and fully independent off grid operation, these systems are well-suited to a region where traditional grid expansion is impossible.
Yet once deployed, a critical operational challenge emerged. The Wayuu population is extremely dispersed, with no communication infrastructure in place. Users have no way to report system failures, forcing service providers to rely on periodic manual inspections. Repair cycles stretch across weeks or even months, leaving families without power for extended periods and undermining the government's humanitarian intent.
What was needed was a power monitoring device capable of operating in completely off-grid environments while enabling precise, long-distance monitoring—a demand that placed exceptionally high requirements on the performance and adaptability of any accompanying smart meter.

The Solution: Eastron's Smart Metering Breakthrough
As a specialized smart meter manufacturer, Eastron was selected for this project based on its mature technology, proven quality, and exceptional adaptability to challenging environments. Eastron became the core power monitoring equipment supplier, delivering a robust solution that transforms how off-grid solar systems are managed.
Eastron provided two core products for the project: the SDM230-DI AC energy meter and the DCM230 DC energy meter. The smart meters accurately capture AC and DC operational data, such as current, voltage, ect. Both meters are connected via Modbus to a modbus-to LoraWan converter, which transmit the measured data to the gateways and from there to a smart energy platform, enabling real-time monitoring, fault alerts, and precise localization—dramatically reducing response and repair times.
To deepen its commitment and continuously enhance service delivery, Eastron is leveraging its strong R&D capabilities to develop a next-generation smart meter. This new device will integrate the core functions of both the SDM230-DI and DCM230, enabling simultaneous and precise AC/DC monitoring. This advancement will further streamline project deployment and ongoing maintenance while reducing overall costs, providing even stronger technological support for the initiative.
Each antenna covers a radius of about 5-7 km around the tower, providing coverage of over 150 square kilometers per antenna—effectively supporting large-scale, dispersed operations and maintenance.
The Impact: From Darkness to 24-Hour Power
With Eastron's smart meters supporting the project, the solar initiative now operates with high efficiency and stability. The chronic problems of difficult fault reporting and delayed maintenance have been effectively resolved, enabling households to enjoy 24-hour stable electricity.
Reliable lighting has improved quality of life and illuminated children's paths to education. Electrically powered water pumps have completely transformed the traditional manual water extraction process, saving time and increasing efficiency while tangibly enhancing the well-being of the local community. The government's promise of better living conditions has become a lived reality.

Our Mission: Crafting Technology, Delivering Responsibility
Supporting the Colombian government's solar welfare initiative is both a testament to Eastron's international capabilities and a vivid demonstration of the company's commitment to social responsibility and global energy equity. Eastron remains deeply focused on smart meter research and manufacturing, delivering high-quality, highly adaptable products that serve welfare and public-interest projects worldwide—using technology to deliver warmth and tangible change.
Moving forward, Eastron will continue to deepen its technological expertise and refine its product offerings. With professional manufacturing capabilities, Eastron aims to support more international welfare energy projects, extending the benefits of smart power and clean energy to even more remote regions—ensuring that users everywhere can depend on stable, safe electricity.
